About University of British Columbia

UBC SCARP is now one of the largest and most comprehensive planning programs in Canada offering graduate education (Master’s and PhD). SCARP’s mission commits us, through education and research, to generating and transforming knowledge into action by planning in partnership to improve lives and communities and the quality of built and natural environments. We innovate and challenge conventions, seeking equitable change to help people. This includes regard for Indigenous equity and dignity, and Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing. Our partnership with Musqueam Indian Band is unique among Planning Schools in the world: together we create curriculum and plans.

Points of Distinction

SCARP offers: a professional Master's degree, that is uniquely accredited by institutions in two countries (Canada and the U.S.A.); a research Master’s degree, that trains students in planning research methods and can serve as a platform for doctoral research; a doctoral degree, that immerses students within interdisciplinary research at the intersections of planning theory and practice; an undergraduate degree in Urban Studies, which is delivered in partnership with UBC’s Department of Geography; a unique cultural immersion curriculum for students in our Indigenous Community Planning concentration, created in partnership with Musqueam Indian Band.
