About Tufts University

The Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning (UEP) educates "practical visionaries"—professionals with a deep commitment to social justice and environmental sustainability grounded in the reality of our complex world. Our students are deeply involved in hands-on innovative policy and planning, working with long-term community partners and a strong network of supportive alumni. At UEP, we model the community we expect our students and alumni to be building in the world around us. We offer two accredited planning degrees: the Master of Arts in Urban and Environmental Policy and the Master of Science in Environmental Policy and Planning.

Points of Distinction

Community partnerships and engagement are an integral part of UEP's teaching and research programs. Students have opportunities to learn from and work with communities through the required Field Projects course, internships, and a variety of project-based elective courses. Students benefit from our connections with other schools at Tufts, including the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and the Fletcher School, and with other Boston area universities. Joint or dual degree options include economics, nutrition and food policy, international affairs, environmental engineering, and law. Students can also pursue our GIS Certificate or Spatial Analytics Certificate concurrently with the masters’ degrees.
