I am a Professor of urban planning with an interest in the intersection of historic preservation and urban development, particularly in legacy cities. I hold a Ph.D. in City & Regional Planning (University of Pennsylvania), Master of Historic Preservation (University of Maryland) and Bachelor of Urban Planning (University of Cincinnati).

Recent Courses Taught

Building Cleveland: This course focuses on the history of architecture and urban form in Cleveland. Once one of the nation’s largest cities and industrial powerhouses, the built environment of Cleveland provides us with tangible evidence of the city’s settlement, growth, and ultimate decline. , Historic Preservation: This course introduces students to the practice of historic preservation in the United States. The course covers the roots of U.S. preservation, federal, state and local policies, and preservation planning. The course focuses on preservation in Cleveland, framed within a larger national and, at times, international context., Qualitative Research Methods: In this survey course, students examine various qualitative research techniques accompanied by examples of their application in papers published in professional journals. Students design and present projects applying the qualitative methods studied., Civic Engagement: Urban professionals engage with the public on a regular basis. This course provides students with introductory knowledge and tools to effectively engage urban communities and various stakeholders in public decision-making.
