About Jianling Li

Dr. Jianling Li is Professor of Urban Planning in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs, at the University of Texas, Arlington (UTA). She received her Master and Ph.D. degrees in Urban Planning from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Prior to joining UTA, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the California Partner for Advanced Transit and Highways (PATH), UC Berkeley. She also earned a BS degree in Economic Geography and had six years of practical experience as a professional planner. She has taught graduate-level courses in transportation planning, research methods, Geographic Information Systems, and urban planning project studio since her tenure with UTA.

Dr. Li has more than twenty-five years of working experience on transportation planning and policy research. Her areas of research include the economic, socioecological, health, and safety impacts of transportation; transportation finance policies; collaborative planning; proactive planning and management of city services via big data-drive discovery; cost/benefit analysis of transportation projects; and travel behavior in response to transportation policies and technology developments. She has conducted focus group interviews and surveys, and applied various quantitative, qualitative, and spatial analysis techniques in her research.

Dr. Li’s research has been funded by governments at all levels including USDOT, TxDOT, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG), the cities of Arlington, De Soto, Celina, towns of Annetta South, Little Elm, etc. She has produced numerous referred journal articles, book chapters, conference papers, and research reports. Her research has been published in various journals, such as the Journal of Transportation Research Part A, the Journal of Transportation Research Part D, Transport Policy, etc., and presented at various international, national, and regional professional conferences or meetings.

Dr. Li has served the planning communities in various capacities over her career. She has served as a referee for numerous journals including the Journal of Transportation Research: Part A; the Journal of Transportation Research: Part D, the Journal of Transportation; the Journal of Urban Studies; the Journal of Spatial Economic Analysis; the Journal of Planning Education and Research; the Journal of Annual of GIS, etc. She had served as an invited panelist for the Transportation Research Board, the National Academies on the Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) during 2006 and 2009; the Chair of the American Planning Association, Transportation Planning Division Student Paper Competition Committee during 2006 and 2010; and the treasurer of the International Association for China Planning (IACP) between 2009 and 2011. She has been the faculty liaison of the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS)-UTA Student Chapter since 2012, and the UTA representative of the DFW Regional Data Center, the Federal Reserve Bank since 2017.
